Nara Park - Nara, Japan

Writer's picture: John Rae-GrantJohn Rae-Grant

Welcome to Nara Park, home of the tamest deer in the world.

These deer are protected in this world heritage site, and have been so for many generations.

As a result, they are not only unafraid of people, they are used to being fed, and not at all shy about nudging up against you, especially once you purchase the special crackers that many shops sell for you to feed them with.

The deer follow you across the park, into the shrines, into the stores... basically everywhere.

They are super cute, though, especially the very young fawns, that are numerous.

We had a great day, with our wonderful hosts Ron and Yaeko showing us the wonders of Nara, including the park, the shrines, the covered shopping streets, and the Sake tasting
